JOIN ONE OF OUR COMMITTEES
The central department of Spire is organized in four committees with different areas of interest: food security, climate and environment, international trade, and sustainable urban development.
The different committees work to develop and influence policies within their areas of interest, compose information material, write articles for the media, and be academic resources for the whole organization.
The committees meet regularly once a week and are always on the hunt for new and devoted people! Contact the coordinator of the committee which interests you the most and join their next committee meeting.

THE FOOD COMMITTEE
The Food Committee works towards more just and sustainable food systems securing access to sufficient safe, nutritious, and culturally acceptable food for everyone. Food shall be sustainably produced within a system that ensures fair distribution. There are big opportunities within agriculture to help solve the nature and climate crisis that are not being utilized. By using methods such as regenerative agriculture, we can produce enough safe food in the future, restore biodiversity, and increase carbon capture and storage in the soil.
The Food Committee aims to spread information to the Norwegian population and influence our politicians. We therefore actively engage with the Norwegian Government’s new action plan on sustainable food systems. In addition, we attend international and national conferences about food systems and are present in the public debate with a clear and loud voice.

THE CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE
The climate and environment committee strives for more ambitious and fair politics on climate and environment in Norway. The committee actively tries to influence the Norwegian Government’s positions in international climate and nature negotiations and attend the UN Climate Change Conference (COP) annually. This year we will also attend the UN Biodiversity Conference negotiations concerning a new international post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.
One of the biggest challenges we are faced with today is the climate and environmental crisis. Climate change is increasing, extreme weather such as floods and drought happen more frequently and are more intense than ever, and levels of biodiversity are dropping at record speed. Spire believes that high-income countries need to take more responsibility and action to reduce the destruction of nature and the climate crisis that we are faced with today. Low-income countries in the global south cannot continue to suffer as a result of our never-ending pursuit of profit.
Spire seeks to inform Norwegian youth about Norway’s responsibility for the environment and climate, and how devastating the consequences of climate change and destruction of nature are for our planet and its inhabitants. We try to influence politics on both a national and international level, for example by attending conventions and political hearings. We are also a part of international networks such as YOUNGO (the Youth Constituency of the UNFCCC).

THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMITTEE
The international trade committee seeks to close the increasing gap between rich and poor – both within and between counties. The environment should be a main priority in international trade agreements and national policies. We need to change the structures of economics which prioritize short-term profit over humans and the environment.
Today’s economic structures result in international trade favoring the rich over the poor. The environment always loses. Democracy is also weakened as international trade regulations are usually discussed behind closed doors, resulting in giving the most power to those with the most equity capital.
We believe that international trade is a question of how we use our resources and that democratic control within trade should be increased. International trade should not be an end in itself, but a tool for creating a better world. The International Trade Committee participates in several international and national networks discussing topics regarding international trade. We inform about international trade agreements, economic structures, and try to influence our politicians to change their policies by attending conventions, meetings, and contributing to the public debate.

THE SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
The Sustainable Urban Development Committee strives for a sustainable future by facing the challenges in urban areas. We focus on sustainable urban development both globally and nationally, as we believe that sustainable cities are critical in achieving a green future! We aim to increase and secure local participation and involvement in urban development planning, especially among youths.
We need to create sustainable cities that are inclusive and environmentally friendly. In 2016, the UN adopted the New Urban Agenda, an action plan on how to secure a more just and sustainable world by improved urban development. Spire wants to share information about this action plan and seeks to influence policy to make sure it is implemented.
Our main areas of focus are participation in urban development, urban aid, socially sustainable and diverse cities, and fair housing politics. The Sustainable Urban Development Committee attends international conferences and governmental hearings, meets with politicians, participates in several national and international networks, and contributes to the public debate.
