WHO ARE WE?

Spire is a Norwegian environmental and development organization that works for a fair and sustainable world. We want to see the big picture, and change the fundamental reasons why injustice occurs. That is why we focus on the environment, food security, international trade and sustainable urban development. The Development Fund is our parent organization.

WHAT DO WE DO?

Spire focuses on information work and political influence to create change. That is why we collaborate with young people in the South and are concerned with communicating South perspectives in our work.
 
Most of our activity is about creating greater awareness and increased knowledge among people in Norway about how we can create a sustainable world. We focus both on North / South issues, and how Norwegian politics is affecting the whole world. Our goal is for more people to get involved, and to change politics and the unjust structures in the world. Therefore, we give extra attention to these four topics:

CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENT
Climate change is the biggest threat to both humans and animals. At Spire we work with figuring out how the world can cut enough greenhouse gas emissions in a way that does not destroy the environment along the way.

FOOD SECURITY
Everyone should have enough, safe and healthy food. The challenge is to produce this food in a sustainable way and to ensure its fair distribution. When 800 million people are starving, at the same time as we throw away 1/3 of the food, there is something wrong with the entire food system. We are working to change this.

SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
More than half of all people live in cities, and the proportion is increasing. How can we create sustainable cities that are inclusive and environmentally friendly? We work to secure real participation in urban development, to create sustainable cities, ensure everyone a safe place to live, and to increase urban food production!

INTERNATIONAL TRADE
It's not something you notice much, but large parts of your everyday life are governed by international trade agreements. We believe that trade should not be an end in itself, but a tool for creating a better world. Today's rules of the game are unfair and punish countries in the South. We're trying to do something about it.
